Located in the Athenian district of Galatsi, this apartment sits within a typical 1960s polykatoikia a defining typology of post-war Athens. The renovation centered around transforming a fragmented and outdated layout into a spacious, contemporary home that could meet the needs of a young couple.

Originally composed of small, disconnected rooms including a separate entrance hall, kitchen, and living room — the apartment felt constrained and compartmentalized. We removed interior walls to create a single open-plan living area, dramatically increasing the sense of space and light while aligning the home with modern living standards. In homage to the building’s history, we preserved and restored the original flooring: terrazzo in the circulation areas and wood parquet in a herringbone pattern in the living spaces. These materials serve as a tactile link to the past, grounding the otherwise contemporary intervention in its Athenian context.

The kitchen was designed as a multifunctional custom joinery piece that runs along one wall. It begins with an entryway closet, transitions into a built-in banquette for dining, and continues into the main kitchen workspace. Heavier appliances are discreetly integrated into a floor-to-ceiling cabinet, maintaining visual calm and clarity

The bathroom was reimagined with playful blue tones and minimal detailing, while the bedroom features a bold mustard yellow closet that adds character and warmth. Custom-designed furniture pieces throughout the apartment were essential in maximizing functionality and flow especially in a compact space and allowed for bold use of color that was enthusiastically embraced by the clients. This project is a testament to how even small-scale renovations can radically shift the way a space is experienced, blending architectural restraint with expressive design elements.
